What is an important artifact (item at least) from The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton? Please read the description?

I was thinking the switchblade... I've never read the book and I don't have a copy so I'm not sure what it was used for.. what was it used for? how would things in the first chapter have changed without it? and who used it and for what??
